DESIGN & BUILDING ADVICE:
Damian Canny - Q & A
Q: Damian, I own a traditional Victorian home in the Eastern suburbs. We wish to renovate the existing house and extend out by about 10 metres in the back yard. This will give us a new kitchen space and larger casual living area. We would also like to put a new main bedroom and ensuite here too. Would you recommend we do the extension in period style to match the existing house, or should we have a completely contrasting modern extension?
DESIGN:
Graham Jones - Exterior Surfaces
As a professional Building Designer who strives to present ‘cutting-edge’, contemporary residential projects each time I sit down at my drawing board, it is necessary for me to research the plethora of products and materials available in an ever-changing market place. This is especially the case with exterior surfaces, when just a mere 25 years ago, our choices were basically limited to brick, brick or brick, and of course if you were building a beach shack in Rosebud, then you would have probably chosen asbestos sheeting!!
INTERIOR IDEAS:
Annie Reid - Window Coverings
We’ve come a long way with window coverings.
Our windows are much bigger than they used to be, often replacing whole walls and bringing in the outside. Window coverings have followed suit. Once simply hung to shield from next-door’s prying eyes, nowadays window coverings are more than simply curtains, and include plantation shutters, louvres, drapes, roller blinds and so many other variations that we are spoilt for choice. And now with summer approaching, we really need to protect what’s on the inside.
